Wet Night!

Sorry about the break in updates, but here comes another!

Last week we were saying that tomorrow would be the coldest air of the season so far, this week, we're thinking just coldish. To the north of Pittsburgh there could be some flurries and snow showers, with very light accumulation possible BUT NOT EXPECTED We may have to watch for a lake effect event sometime soon, it is the season for them. But we'll see what happens! Heres your downtown forecast!

MINOR SNOWFALL EVENT...

^^ Thats my (first) snowfall map. Notice the lake effect areas. Now, I'm not saying that this will happen, but if you would get under a heavy lake effect band (1"+ an hour), you could easy see 3+inches. This is still a few days away, and no doubt this map will change. But for now, thats that.

Cold thanksgiving?

Its looking more and more likely that we'll be below average (20's, 30's!) for Wednesday and Thanksgiving.
MODELS SPLIT IN SOLUTIONS FOR THE BEGINNING OF THE PERIOD ON TUESDAY
WITH GFS QUICKLY PROGRESSING LOW PRESSURE THROUGH NORTHERN GREAT
LAKES WHILE ECMWF AND CANADIAN STILL SLOWER KEEPING LOW PRESSURE
OVER THE MIDWEST. FOR NOW CONTINUED WITH LOWER CHANCE POPS ON
TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY. THIS PORTION OF FORECAST WILL HAVE TO BE
REFINED A BIT OVER TIME. POPS MAY NEED TO BE INCREASED FOR THE
PERIODS BETWEEN TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY FOR RAIN SHOWERS BUT AT THIS
POINT CONFIDENCE IS LOW. GOING FURTHER OUT IN TIME HOWEVER THINGS
ARE LOOKING A BIT MORE SIMILAR BETWEEN GFS AND ECMWF. BOTH SHOWING
COLD UPPER TROUGH SWINGING ACROSS THE AREA THURSDAY AND FRIDAY.
WHILE THIS STILL QUITE A WAYS OUT IN THE FORECAST THERE HAS BEEN
SOME CONSISTENCY IN THE MODELS WITH THIS FEATURE OVER THE PAST DAY
OR SO. WITH THAT CONTINUED WITH THE CHANCE OF RAIN/SNOW AND EVEN ALL
SNOW IN FORECAST FOR THE END OF THE WEEK. THICKNESS ALOFT...H850
TEMPS AND SURFACE TEMPS WOULD INDICATE ALL SNOW RATHER THAN A MIX OF
RAIN AND SNOW. THERE/S STILL QUITE A BIT OF TIME TO SORT OUT ALL THE
DETAILS OF THIS EVENT...BUT THE MAIN POINT IN THE LONG TERM IS THAT
THERE IS THE POTENTIAL FOR QUICK CHANGES TO THE RATHER MILD
CONDITIONS THE AREA HAS EXPERIENCED OVER THE PAST WEEKS.

Thats from the NWS out of Cleavland. Its much more detaled that the one out of Pittsburgh.

Winter will make a cameo appearance next week. Much colder air will invade the northern Great Plains Tuesday then move on to chill the Midwest and Great Lakes Wednesday. The colder weather will reach the northeastern part of the country on Thanksgiving.

This will not be a bitter blast, but it will be cold enough. The drop in temperatures will be especially noticeable considering the great lack of cold weather so far this month. Take Minnesota, for instance, where it will be in the 50s Saturday. Turning the page, the 30s and 20s that show up next week are going to feel pretty darn cold.

The cold weather invasion will produce snow showers across the Midwest and Great Lakes Wednesday and Thursday, and bands of heavier snow may set up in the snow belts of northern Michigan, western New York and northwestern Pennsylvania. This may have some bearing on travel through those regions though a big lake-effect event is unlikely.

Snow showers will also get into the central and northern Appalachians Thursday. The flakes will look pretty coming down but no accumulation is expected.

Story By AccuWeather.com Senior Meteorologist John Kocet.

it'll get better, don't worry!

Its been rainy, thanks to a front that has been off to our west for a little while. The low pressure center associated with this has been bringing the moisture up this far north, but don't complain, we need rain!

NEAR TERM...TONIGHT...
For tonight, the front will pass through the area, and showers should start to diminish, but should continue in some areas, but not wide spread. A few wet snow flakes could mix in across the highest ridges tonight. Lows will be in the mid 30's outside of the city, with downtown in the low 40's/high 30's.

SHORT TERM...FRIDAY-SUNDAY
The upper level low that has been helping some of this rain should move east across the Great Lakes into the North East, with High pressure building in from South-west. A weak trough will move through the area, but with a lack of moisture, will only increase the clouds. A low pressure (Nor'easter?) will move up the South East coast, making a chance of showers across the Eastern ridges. Temps should be near or slightly above average in this time period.

for now, no long term forecast, but for now, Turkey day is looking colder than it has been.
